Prove the identity $${\arcsin} \frac{x-1}{x+1} = 2{\arctan} \sqrt{x} - \frac{\pi}{2}$$

Proof)

$$\frac{d}{dx} \left(\arcsin \frac{x-1}{x+1}\right)=\frac{1}{\sqrt{1-(\frac{x-1}{x+1})^2 }} \cdot  \frac{2}{(x+1)^2}= \frac{1}{\sqrt{\frac{4x}{(x+1)^2}}} \cdot \frac{2}{(x+1)^2}=\frac{x+1}{2\sqrt{x}}\cdot \frac{2}{(x+1)^2}=\frac{1}{\sqrt{x}(x+1)}$$

$$\frac{d}{dx} \left(2\arctan \sqrt{x}\right)=2\cdot\frac{1}{1+(\sqrt{x})^2}\cdot\frac{1}{2\sqrt{x}}=2\cdot\frac{1}{1+x}\cdot\frac{1}{2\sqrt{x}}=\frac{1}{\sqrt{x}(x+1)}$$

여기서 $\frac{d}{dx} \left(\arcsin \frac{x-1}{x+1}\right)=\frac{d}{dx} \left(2\arctan \sqrt{x}\right)$이므로, ${\arcsin} \frac{x-1}{x+1} = 2{\arctan} \sqrt{x} + C$임을 알 수 있다. (단, $C$는 상수)

여기서 위 식에 x에 0을 대입하여 C를 구하자.

$${\arcsin} (-1) = 2{\arctan}(0) + C$$

$$\therefore\,C={\arcsin} (-1) - 2{\arctan}(0) =-\frac{\pi}{2}-2\cdot0=-\frac{\pi}{2}$$

따라서 우리는 $\,{\arcsin} \frac{x-1}{x+1} = 2{\arctan} \sqrt{x} - \frac{\pi}{2}$가 성립함을 증명했다.

A rectangle $R$ of length $l$ and width $w$ is revolved about the line L. Find the volume of the resulting solid of revolution.

sol)

파푸스-굴딘 정리를 이용한다.

$$V=2\pi hS \, \text{(단,} \,h=\text{축까지의 거리}\, S=\text{도형의 넓이)}$$

먼저, 직사각형이므로 무게중심은 두 대각선의 교점이다. 따라서 $h$는 $d$+(대각선 길이의 절반)이다.

$$\text{대각선의 길이}=\sqrt{l^2+w^2}$$

$$\therefore \; h=d+\frac{\sqrt{l^2+w^2}}{2}$$

또한 넓이 $S$는 간단하게 $lw$이다.

$$\therefore \; V=2\pi hS=2\pi \left(d+\frac{\sqrt{l^2+w^2}}{2}\right)\cdot lw=\left(\sqrt{l^2+w^2}+2d\right)lw \pi$$

If $f$ is a quadratic function such that $f(0)=1$ and

$$\int{\frac{f(x)}{x^2(x+1)^3}}dx$$

is a rational function, find the value of $f'(0)$

sol)

$f(0)=1$이고, $f(x)$가 2차식이므로 $f(x)=ax^2+bx+1$로 표현할 수 있으며, 우리가 구해야하는 $f'(0)$ 값이 $b$와 같음도 알 수 있다.

먼저 유리함수의 적분을 하기 위해 Partial Fraction Decomposition을 하자.

$$\frac{f(x)}{x^2(x+1)^3}=\frac{ax^2+bx+1}{x^2(x+1)^3}=\frac{a-b+1}{(x+1)^3}+\frac{2-b}{(x+1)^2}+\frac{1}{x^2}+\frac{3-b}{x+1}+\frac{b-3}{x}$$

이를 적분하면 아래와 같다.

$$\int{\frac{f(x)}{x^2(x+1)^3}}dx=\frac{-a+b-1}{2(x+1)^2}+\frac{b-2}{x+1}-\frac{1}{x}+(b-3)\ln\vert{x}\vert-(b-3)\ln\vert{x+1}\vert+C$$

이때, $\int{\frac{f(x)}{x^2(x+1)^3}}dx$가 유리함수라고 하였으므로, $\ln$항이 존재해서는 안된다.

$$(b-3)\ln\vert{x}\vert-(b-3)\ln\vert{x+1}\vert=(b-3)\{\ln\vert{x}\vert-\ln\vert{x+1}\vert\}=0$$

$$\therefore \; b=3$$
